The Spy Files with Tony Brassel 04-05-2021

Sky Racing’s form expert, TONY BRASSEL, checks out prospective winners after some super trials in Sydney.

(2f, Capitalist – Damedge. Trainers: Peter and Paul Snowden)

Stable has had a bit of luck with this breed – like so many other trainers! Her mum is a half-sister to G2 winner VINTEDGE and Listed winner YOUTHS EDGE. Ran last in a trial during the summer but has developed considerably – as shown by Monday’s beaut trial win. Quickly made play a couple of lengths clear before maintaining the margin with ease. May well trial again before her race debut.

(4m, Deep Field – Cattalo. Trainer: John Thompson)

Off the scene since an unsuccessful Melbourne Spring Carnival jaunt but placed down south at Listed level. One of the better sprinting mares in Sydney right now, and keep in mind she’s three for three first-up from a spell. Shared the lead and at no stage was she extended in the straight when a close second to classy import BULLETIN over 737m.

(2c, Snitzel – Via Africa. Trainers: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott)

Unraced colt coming off top trials at Randwick. Initially closed off gamely between runners for third to PIZARRO on April 20. Then lifted his game to romp four panels clear over 1050m this week. In usual style from this stable, the chunky chestnut leapt from the gates and led as he liked before Tim Clark shifted gears. The acceleration was impressive. Looks a very tidy prospect and hails from a South African family.

(3g, Starspangledbanner – Barinka. Trainers: Michael and Richard Freedman)

Classy sprinter-miler coming off a two month freshen and recent placings in the G2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and $1m Inglis Sprint (1200m). Tommy Berry kept him ticking over with this narrow, though powerful Randwick 1050m heat win after stalking the leaders. Clocked the third fastest of eight heats when just tipping out speedball LILLEMOR.

(2c, Deep Impact – Honesty Prevails. Trainer: Richard Litt)

Another unraced colt moving through his trial paces with pizzaz. Strolled around when fourth in a Hawkesbury heat before streaking home with a Randwick 1050m heat. He ran the fastest of eight trials over the trip. Loved the way the youngster launched in the closing stages – much in the style of his trainer’s flagship galloper CASTELVECCHIO. Mum won the G3 Widden Stakes (1000m).

(2g, Capitalist – Marli. Trainer: Mark Newnham)

A beaut debut barrier trialler on Warwick Farm’s Polytrack last week. Accelerated keenly from midfield once Rachel King clicked him up and simply coasted late, running third over 740m. His boom sire won the Breeders’ Plate and so did his ‘uncle’ KHAN, a half-brother to MARLI.

(3f, Headwater – Quick’s The Word. Trainer: Mark Newnham)

Former Hayes-Dabernig galloper with a Pakenham synthetic win to her credit after four runs. Made her Sydney debut for a new stable by leading most of the way in the fastest of six 737m heats. She did the job under restraint for Rachel King, beating very smart, experienced sprinting fillies LA FORET and BALLISTIC LOVER.

(3f, Lonhro – Miniature. Trainer: James Cummings)

Belies her name and possesses a rather large dose of ability, too. Followed her very easy third at the Hawkesbury trials on April 19 with a sixth over 1050m at Randwick earlier this week. Amazingly, the big filly went from leading at the 100m to being swamped in a tremendously tight go, REINVEST ultimately winning. The vision reveals Rachel King simply sitting up on her near the post – she could have won.
