Tears and Beers flowing after Sandkuhl’s first winner

AUSTRALIA Jul 31 2021 07:15

Three-year-old filly Snowbella is a horse Fiona Sandkuhl will never forget after the apprentice recorded her first career victory aboard the striking grey at Goulbourn on Friday.

Stable apprentice to Albury trainer Mitchell Beer, Sandkuhl took Snowbella to the lead and kicked for home around the turn, holding off the fast-finishing Ita over the concluding stages.

Visibly emotional while speaking to Sky Racing’s Chynna Marston post-race, Beer was full of praise for Sandkuhl, labelling her ‘an absolute ripper’.

“I’m just wrapped for her,” Beer said.

“This girl, she is just like a part of the family. She has been with us for a while now and she is just like a little sister to everyone.

“For her to get her first winner for me, it’s just terrific. She is a credit to her family. She has had a lovely upbringing and her mum gets up as much as she can.

“She has done it really tough during Covid not being able to get home to see her family, but to land her first winner for the stable from just a couple of rides is phenomenal,” Beer added.

Last seen in June when well-beaten in a Class 3 Highway at Randwick, Beer was forced to hold his breath over the concluding stages, fearing Snowbella’s fitness would give way late following a 48-day break between runs.

“She jarred up badly and pulled up terrible coming out of the Highway,” Beer said.

“The last hundred I felt quite terrible for her (Sandkuhl) because I thought she (Snowbella) might hit the wall.”

After climbing aboard Chap’s Dream for her first race ride earlier this month, Sandkuhl’s described the feeling as ‘amazing’ after she crossed the line aboard Snowbella in just her sixth outing as a jockey.

Check out the interview on Sky Thoroughbred Central here.

“She is a beautiful horse and I was in shock when I passed the line,” Sandkuhl said.

“She began really well and I was really happy the way she was travelling.

“It took us a little bit to get there but once we got there she was great.”
