Markets and trials point to a Berry good Spring

AUSTRALIA Jul 31 2021 07:55

TAB have released another 15 feature race markets for the upcoming spring carnival, headlined by outstanding mare Verry Elleegant, Brisbane Winter Carnival star Zaaki and a strong crop of three-year-old sprinters.

Probabeel has been instilled as the $6 favourite to add yet another G1 to her name in the Makybe Diva Stakes on September 11, the same race in which Peter Moody has earmarked to unleash exhilarating Queensland gelding Incentivise ($11) for his Victorian debut.

Culminating in a 12-length demolition of G1 winner Mirage Dancer at Eagle Farm, Incentivise has strung six-straight victories together and currently holds favouritism for the Melbourne Cup ($11).

He has also opened equal-favourite ($8) with Godolphin’s reliable mare, Collette, for the Underwood Stakes and sits on the second line of betting for the Turnbull Stakes ($11) and Caulfield Stakes ($11).

Chris Waller’s superstar mare, Verry Elleegant, is high-up in markets to add to her impressive eight G1 triumphs.

Set to resume in the G1 Winx Stakes where she is currently the $2.80-favourite, Verry Elleegant is joint-favourite ($6) with Zaaki to defend her Turnbull Stakes crown at Flemington before a likely Cox Plate assault.

Following an outstanding Brisbane winter campaign which included his demolition of the Brisbane Cup, Zaaki dominates the majority of middle-distance markets throughout the spring.

The European import is joint-favourite for the Turnbull Stakes ($6), and outright-favourite for the Caulfield Stakes ($3.50) and Mackinnon Stakes ($4.50).

Mick Price and Michael Kent junior will also be armed with a strong hand throughout the carnival, headlined by emerging superstars Ayrton and Profiteer.

A winner of four from five starts, lightly raced gelding Ayrton is the joint favourite for two Caulfield features’, the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and the Toorak Handicap ($8 in both).

Exciting sprinter Profiteer, last seen starting favourite in the Golden Slipper, has opened favourite for the Moir Stakes ($5) and Coolmore Stud Stakes ($6), ahead of Sires Produce winner, Anamoe, and Golden Slipper winner, Stay Inside (both $8).

Cruising to a dominant trial win on Tuesday morning, Berry is confident the Richard and Michael Freedman trained colt has clearly improved physically following a spell and is set to make his spring return in the San Domenico Stakes.

“He is obviously an exciting galloper that has taken all before him and hasn’t put a foot wrong,” Berry said.

“He has put on a bit of weight, filled out a lot and is going great guns.”

Berry also gave a strong push for two more G1 aspirants, Rosehill Guineas winner, Mo’unga, and Caulfield Cup second-favourite Mount Popa ($13).

“I haven’t been able to gallop or trial him (Mo’unga) at all but he has had one jumpout and we might gallop him next week at the Kensington meeting,” Berry said.

“He is a lovely colt and might head towards the Cox Plate, or the Epsom Handicap and Golden Eagle depending on how he returns in the Winx Stakes.

“Annabel is very happy with him. She said he has come back much stronger and is going well.

“Mount Popa had his first trial back on Friday and he has had two very good preparations in Australia now and I was very pleased to see him trial so well this morning.

“He is an exciting horse and could be heading anywhere towards a Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup, ” Berry added.

Stay Inside is just one of many exciting three-year-old’s looking towards Spring glory, with a plethora of fillies looking to replicate the outstanding performances of dual-G1 winner Montefilia last season.

Four Moves Ahead and She’s All Class have opened joint-favourites ($8) for the Flight Stakes, ahead of a host of exciting fillies; Najmaty ($11), Crystal Bound ($15) and Yearning ($15).
